UNDERSTANDING HAIR LOSS: TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM

UNDERSTANDING HAIR LOSS: TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM

Hair loss is a normal part of the hair growth cycle, with individuals typically losing up to 100 hairs a day. However, when the hair roots are pushed prematurely into the resting state, it can result in a condition called telogen effluvium. This can occur due to various factors, such as high fevers, childbirth, severe infections, chronic illness, psychological stress, surgery, thyroid issues, crash diets, and certain medications.

Acute telogen effluvium is characterized by a sudden increase in hair loss, usually about two months after a triggering event. This can cause the hair to come out in handfuls. On the other hand, chronic telogen effluvium is a less common form that occurs after a significant amount of hair has already been lost.

While the most noticeable hair loss occurs on the scalp, it is possible to experience hair loss elsewhere on the body. Shedding is often observed during activities like shampooing, combing, or gently manipulating the hair. However, shedding gradually decreases over 6 to 8 months once the underlying cause is resolved.

To diagnose telogen effluvium, a small skin biopsy may be taken from the scalp and examined under a microscope to assess the condition of the hair follicles. This helps in determining the appropriate measures to prevent further hair loss.

It’s important to remember that telogen effluvium is different from gradual genetic hair thinning. If you have concerns about hair loss, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and guidance.
